Radon is a radioactive gas that is invisible, odourless, and tasteless. It occurs naturally throughout the world and releases when uranium in soil and rock break down. Due to Saskatchewan's geology, it is known for having a high potential for radon.
Radon gas follows pathways throughout the soil. It can find entry through any part of the house that is in contact with the soil. Radon gas can enter through cracks in the foundation, floor slab, construction joints, openings around utility lines or piping, floor drains, or even cavities inside walls. Our houses, specifically our basement, has a negative pressure compared to the outside environment. This negative pressure creates a "sucking" like effect on the soil below the slab/foundation walls. Radon gas can also enter houses through our water, although it is typically removed with water treatment plants.
The first step is to get your home tested.
Health Canada recommends a long-term test which is 91 days to 1 year. All Sask Radon uses a long-term Alpha tracker. Our tests undergo quality assurance ensuring that they are properly stored and not contaminated from background radiation.
This test includes: deployment, install, pick-up, sending away for analysis, results, and an interpretation with one of our certified C-NRPP measurement professionals all for $125+ tax.
Kits can also be purchased through the Lung Association at https://www.homeradontest.ca/partner/jones
This services includes Jones Radon deploying the device, retrieving the device, and an interpretation of the results by a certified professional.
Radon exposure has been proven to cause lung cancer. It is harmful to all the occupants of the house including pets.
All Sask Radon uses various techniques to ensure you, as the client, receives the most optimal solution. The depressurization techniques use a radon fan to draw pressure underneath the concrete floor, and essentially the radon is "sucked out" before it enters the house.
The techniques we utilize are:
Sub-Slab Depressurization
Sump-Pump Depressurization
Crawl-Space Depressurization
Some houses, dependent on foundation lay-out. maybe require combinations of the techniques.
